Description

Dr. Ellen G. Friedman retired in May 2022 from TCNJ’s English Department with over 44 years of service to the department and the College. Throughout her career, Dr. Friedman taught graduate courses in contemporary literary theory, Holocaust studies, and modern and contemporary U.S. literature. She taught undergraduate courses in Postmemory and the Holocaust, Representations of the Holocaust, Gender and Democracy, and U.S. Literature, 1900-present.

Dr. Friedman served as Director of Women's Studies 1989-2007. When she started as Director, it was just a small program, but it is now the 2nd largest US Women's Studies program in the USA. In 2001, she established its Women in Learning and Leadership program, and the WGS major. She has several book and article publications and has given talks nationally and internationally.

She organized the Faculty-Student Interdisciplinary Collaborative Seminar in 2013, with lasting impact. She is currently serving on the Faculty Advisory Council of the Fortunoff Video Archives for Holocaust Testimonials at Yale University.

Join us in honoring Ellen G. Friedman’s exceptional career with a gift to TCNJ’s School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Annually, a graduate student will receive a Best Essay Award that reflects Dr. Friedman’s commitment to rigorous academic scholarship, engagement with critical theory, and clear writing.

In a few short days we exceeded our $2,000 goal this year! Help us continue to increase our support for English graduate students.

Thank you!
